Brief Technical Introduction
Lanolin and Lanicare™ Skin Products
Lanicare™ is easy to use (with no need for any technical knowledge)! However, for those with interest, the natural chemistries behind Lanicare™ (and the ultra pure lanolin which makes it possible) are fascinating to explore!
Ultra purified lanolin is an entirely natural product derived from raw lanolin secreted by sheep to protect and waterproof their fleece/skin. Raw lanolin is washed from sheared fleece (using hot soapy water) and recovered by settling/centrifugation. Then, a series of washing steps progressively purify, and then ultra purify, the material.
Concentrated ultra pure lanolin obtained in this way is a thick, viscous yellowish substance having an EXTREMELY complex natural biochemical makeup. Essentially, the material is the product of an efficient (and highly optimized) natural mechanism sheep use to protect themselves against the elements.

Even seasoned biochemists, when first learning about the natural makeup of lanolin, are often amazed by the sheer number of compounds present. Essentially, sheep are able to synthesize/secrete a complex potpourri of molecules as a supplement to those internally present in skin (to maintain softness, moisture, and overall health).

From a technical standpoint, the compounds present in ultra-purified lanolin are mainly complex sterols (like cholesterol), either in pure form, or bonded with other chemistries. Although scientific estimates vary, its likely this type of lanolin may contain up to 20,000 distinct biochemical species! As such, its a substance quite impossible to reproduce artificially (at least by any known technique). Its uniquely natural, plain and simple.
Although the innumerable compounds present in ultra pure lanolin supplement those which internally soften, moisten, and protect skin, the associated texture (as one might imagine) is thick, viscous, and sticky. So, in concentrated form, without any modification, ultra pure lanolin, while potent, is also generally less suited for direct topical use.
In order to resolve this issue, and create concentrated medical (USP) lanolin formulations which are easy to use, Dr. Stephen Sutton (the inventor of Lanicare™) developed an entirely new formulation technology. Of course, exact details are proprietary, but medical lanolin is combined with ultra pure emollient oils (enabling very spreadable textures while preserving potency and dissipation).
